I’ve reflected a lot on what I did wrong. First thing was probably putting the boy on the road on an incline, I should have tried him out on a grassy incline for a while. But that was mere hubris. Very thankful he was not hurt.
Having made that mistake, I think my big mistake was to ride near him when he is seemingly put of control, but on the other hand he was in danger so I couldn’t very well have just let him roll and hope for the best, so if I had the moment again, as soon as I realised he wasn’t going to brake I’d have jumped off my bike and run up to him, wresting control of the bike from him.
