Got a public holiday for some unknown cause… sprayed all the vegies with some liquid feed. Nice morning out there, birds are chirpy.

I saw some new birds yesterday. As I went to put the ducks to bed about 80-100 small, dark, rotund birds burst out from my Lilli Pilli. They flew off and then another 80-100 burst out of the same tree! Then one of the flocks flew back past chasing a small hawk or kite. Thought the show was over when even more birds came out of the tree! Got no idea what they were but they were feisty! To look at the tree beforehand you would have had no idea there were hundreds of birds roosting in there.

Most likely. If so I am quite happy they have moved on.

My raspberry canes forgot to flower this year. Have others had this happen this season? I have both sorts, and I prune them appropriately. I did get one or two of the early ones – black raspberries? – but the Heritage completely forgot they should make babies from seeds.

By pruning appropriately, did you cut everything off except the newest shoots?

I pruned them according to type. The ones that bear on first year canes I cut to the ground. The ones that bear on 2nd year canes I only cut out the old canes. This is the appropriate pruning method.

So it wasn’t the pruning then.

I’ve been busy and all my pots need attention. re-potting is the next task for all of them, would have liked to have done this a few weeks back, but timing is out of sync at present, some are going really good, some have used up their resources and looking shabby (need liquid feed as well), the pitcher plants don’t like the cool coming in, got them under cover of another tree, the zygo’s are starting to flower though, they usually put on a good show. Had first bat flower this year :)

I’m never able to grow things in pots. No that’s way incorrect. I’ve had upwards of 60,000 pots in my backyard for years at a time. I’m simply over all of that now. I still have some stuff in pots but water is simply too expensive unless you are selling the product.

While I don’t have a cough, I have come down with a malaise that has made me feel quite lethargic… hope its not too serious.

Anyone here good with plant identification?

was spraying weeds in the front garden and noticed these trees. there’s 4 of them within about 2 feet.

1) what are they?
2) should I dig them up and spread them out a bit?

They look like mallee trees. Hard to say which one without other identification features.

they’re eicalypts, just unsure which type.

any tips on pruning them to keep them at a shrubbish size?

Just keep taking the tips whenever they get too lanky.

Gone very quiet in here lately. I have grass to cut. It seems the Autumn break has arrived. And it is getting colder now too. I have started planting out cabbagey things now the cabbage whites have all drowned.

For me it is getting too late to plant new brassica out. I need to have them growing well before the cold weather arrives.

I’ve spent the day pruning grapes and clearing up so I can get more peas in and a place for broad beans.
