I just heard British comedian Andy Hamilton talking about Nigerian scammers.

He said that while most of us thought that their poor grammar and phrasing in their scam e-mails (e.g using ‘Sharon’ as an adjective) was evidence of stupidity, it was actually brilliance.

It sorts the wheat from the chaff for them very quickly. You don’t want to waste time with the 99.9% of people who quickly recognise it as scam. You just want responses from the 0.1% who are too stupid to detect that. As a scammer, they’re your target market.
