The October 2021 elections were largely peaceful but the aftermath was not. The Pro-Iran Fatah party did very poorly, dropping from 48 to 17 seats, and pro-Iran Militias held protests in November.
Ultimately the effect of the election was to reduce the pro-Iran alliance in parliament, increase the party of Muqtada al-Sadr (somewhat anti-Western Shia leader), and the new Progress Party (secular modern party) picked up about 12% of seats on debut. The Rule of Law and Kurdish parties also increased their representation, as did secular parties such as Emitad and NGM, and it has basically left the situation in a bit of a three cornered pitney between 1) pro-Iran parties, 2) Sadristd, and 3) an alliance of modernising parties and ethnic minority parties. As yet there has been no President or Prime Minister chosen. Some reporting suggests there will be a compromise between the modernists, the Kurda and al-Sadr. Various parties including the Sadrist have periodically boycotted the discussions, which has deprived parliament of its quora required to appoint positions.
