That’s what the FBI said before, and low and behold, that’s what they are saying now.

I still think this is the most likely. But it involves admitting that MAGA and all the alt-right influencers were lying the whole time. People have built their entire political and personal identity around being true believers in the conspiracy. The real conspiracy is that the whole conspiracy is a lie, and there’s a lot of people rightly afeared for their lives if they admit it was just made up.

They weren’t “lying” in that they knowingly told untruths, they were just engaging in bullshit rhetoric and it’s now bitten them in the arse.
