so it’s the historians’ fault now

There’s truth in that.

Some of us here would be the last generation in Australia to have encountered polio and its effects on our family and friends.

Who in Australia, aged less than their sixties, would have seen a young relative or friend wearing these?

What generation of parents, after that of our parents or grandparents, might conceive of the relief that the arrival of the Salk vaccine brought? In the US, it was so rapturously welcomed by mothers and fathers that there was a move to make Jonas Salk’s birthday a national day of commemeoration?

Imagine their joy when they understood that none of their children need be condemned to live like this:

Decades of safety have bred contempt for disease. Lunacy, and the lust for ‘influence’ have bred a style of disinformation that finds fertile ground for nonsense, nourished by ignorance and trendiness.

Thomas Jefferson said that “the tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants”.

It seems that the the ‘tree of popular medical understanding’ must be refreshed from time to time with the lives of children.

They’ll certainly notice it if polio gets back into the US. Several other diseases, too.

In which case, it will all be the fault of Joe Biden.
