I got a very strange letter yesterday from Origin Energy. We used to use them for electricity for the practice. This letter says “You have a credit on your closed Origin account. Your closed electricity account is fully paid and you now have a credit balance of $4.00, which is an overcharge that we need to refund to you. Note that this amount is correct at 2 September 2025 but may have changed since.
This is because we recently received payment(s) via BPAY that was more than the amount due on your final bill”
It is addressed to my home address, but to the company name. We closed the company down about 5 years ago and cut off the electricity to the practice address about the same time, when we sold the building. We never used BPAY to pay the bills. I’ve shuffled around in the shed and found an old company electricity bill from mid 2019 and the account number is nothing like the one on the letter just received. For the moment I can’t find the final electricity bill, although I must have it somewhere. All the paperwork got muddled up when the tax office decided to audit us over a year after we closed it all down, and it was the middle of COVID and everything had to be scanned and sent to the tax office because they were not doing desk audits.
I’ve looked carefully, and the ABN matches for Origin, from the old bill. The website address given on the letter seems to be authentic. It’s baffling.
They’re on to you.
