I’ve been doing a lot of research into a popular political movement in the US known as the “Dark Enlightenment”, led by a man named Curtis Yarvin.

Yarvin is a political theorist promoted by billionaire Peter Thiel. He argues that democracy has failed because the masses are ultimately incompetent, indecisive, and incapable of making difficult long-term decisions. He instead advocates for concentrating power in a strong executive or technocratic elite, even if that necessitates fascism.

He’s a man who has been referenced multiple times by Vice President JD Vance and is believed to be the ideological mentor to him and a growing list of tech-oligarchs.

The movement essentially envisions a society which is governed like a corporation, where concepts like civil liberties and welfare programs are dismantled to allow for rapid technological advancement, and power is removed from courts, NGO’s, the media, and universities, and placed exclusively in the hands of a powerful executive “elite” with no democratic accountability.

I kept wondering why this concept could possibly appeal to anyone who wasn’t already rich or powerful, and as such wouldn’t be part of the imagined “elite”. JD Vance, in particular, was a man who grew up poor. Why would he want to deconstruct democracy and hand power to an “elite” that has never shown any interest in the well being of the working class from which he was born?

But then I learned more about the darker side of this ideology. Yarvin is also an unapologetic advocate for the idea that intelligence varies greatly across races, thus creating a natural hierarchy in which the white race and certain asian races are placed above Africans and other supposedly less intelligent races.

Followers of the Dark Enlightenment regularly quote the controversial 1995 book by Charles Murray, The Bell Curve, which argues that intelligence is determined by genetics, and as such inequality is inevitable. But importantly, this book also argues that intelligence varies as a result of race, thus making inequality between races unavoidable.

Or to put it bluntly, Yarvin states himself “I doubt that all races are equally smart.”

It then starts to make a bit more sense… when these men talk about an authoritarian state led by “elites”… they mean led by a white minority. They believe democracy doesn’t work because “less intelligent” races are outnumbering white people, and as such cannot be trusted to govern.

They are essentially arguing for a fascist white minority rule like the apartheid society men like Thiel and Elon Musk grew up in, and continue to defend. These men are not just fringe internet “edge-lords”, they are among the richest and most powerful men in the world with one of their disciples next-in-line for the Presidency.
