I saw some birds.. big ones…

As I was walking up the back paddock a few days ago I glanced up to see, about 20 m away, a big wedge-tailed eagle at the bottom of a dive, grabbing at something on the ground. It didn’t look like it came away with anything in its talons.

And yesterday a mob of roos was hanging out in the same area and the same thing happened.. I saw an eagle diving into the midst of the roos, snatching at something and flying up into some lightweight branches of a gum tree not far away and perching awkwardly. I’m not sure just what its game was. Wedgies are known for preying on roos, particularly the young and weak, but I’ve never seen it.

A little while later 2 big black cockatoos landed in a small grevillea not far from the house. Just my day for big bird sightings I guess.

The wedgie would take young joeys if out of the pouch and if they harrass the mother roo enough she’ll take fright and toss the joey out. I observed two eagles harrassing one big roo. One attacked the eyes while the other came in from behind. So they can take the bigger roos down. It just takes two or more eagles to do it.

Yeah, that’s sort of thing’s talked about. I’d like to see them going an adult roo.

Knock out one eye and the roo can only go around in a circle.
