I’ve read, in several places, that many (enough?) Americans think it best to vote Democrat for state government and Republican for federal; this would seem consistent with Martinez’s (and Chad’s) election and the Republican dominance at the federal election. Chad was elected in 2016, taking over from Karen St Germain — another Democrat.
It usually depends whether the election in question is a state-wide or local office: for example the Governor is chosen by the state at large where the majority of the electorate is Republican while local offices like state representatives my be competing in an election in a district that is majority Democrat. There are exceptions of course like moderate Republicans in New England and conservative Democrats in the South.
