I was chatting with some professors from Kansas the other day, and they were saying that MAGA supporters are trying to distance themselves from Trump.
Some one (it might have been Brian Tyler Cohen) said the other day that there does appear to be a drifting away of close support for Trump, within his White House circle, withing the Republican party, and within MAGA.
He attributed it to the realisation that Trump is not going to be around forever, or even for much longer, and that looking out for their own survival dictates that they need to look towards other figures who can provide a post-Trump structure.
This would be even more urgent and important if, as seems quite possible, the Democrats control Congress after this year, and possibly also the Senate later on.
So, there’s less knee-jerk defence of Trump’s actions and blunders these days, and a lot more of people saying well, you know, it’s Trump, i’m not really involved, i can comment on that, etc.
It was suggested that Trump might end up like his father, after dementia set in. He’d turn up at the office, sign fake papers, and make phone calls (but the phone was connected only to his secretary’s desk). Give him the illusion of being relevant.
Unless they do decide to ditch him altogether.
