I’m told the age to first pregnancy is 12-15 years for elephants, so much the same as humans. Greenland sharks take about 10 times longer, so it seems reasonable to ask why that might be the case.
the gestation period between humans and elephants is much different. Interestingly Galapagos tortoise also experience a late puberty stage, yet live for up to 150 years..
Elephants gestation is about twice as long as humans, which given their large size seems unsurprising.
The long life and late puberty of tortoises does seem a little strange, but (to me) not to the extent of Greenland sharks.
How long do Greenland sharks live?
