Today I was mostly with older kids, years 5 and 6. They wrote about their school holidays. Some kids had really shitty holidays and refused to write about it, but some kids talked to me about it instead. Some kids didn’t get anything for Easter. Some kids witnessed, or were part of, DV situations. Some kids have generational trauma. Some kids were forced to stay with relatives they don’t like/hurt them.

I just don’t understand how people can do things to their kids, partners, and ex-partners. I’d never make it through Arts’ course.

I also corrected a year 2 teacher who had written “what are galexy’s made of?”

That would be a bit disheartening. Hopefully talking about it was good for them.

Also a bit depressing that someone who writes “galexy’s” gets to be a teacher, but I suppose they can’t be too choosy.

You can choose though Mr Car. You don’t get folks like me to teach maths, and you don’t get folks in to teach English who can’t spell. They do it in Iceland and swap classes.

You can’t go in at 5.30am, try to get all the paperwork done and deal with distressed students. Do recess and lunch duties. Then got to meetings and finally get out at 7pmish and go home to prepare for the next day. It’s not sustainable.

Until the crazy work hours are cut then folks will walk away.

And none of the paperwork ever gets used. It is just busy worked.

I think before this generations of teachers parented children with terrible homes, now they are doing busy doing paperwork. This is destroying the fabric of our society. The level of physical violence towards teachers in alarming. The behaviours of students with trauma or intergenerational trauma is not addressed and that is not helping anyone.

65% of Queenslanders are reading and writing at a 5th Grade Level. (Source: Teachers and Schooling Making A Difference: Productive pedagogies, assessment and performance 1st Edition by Pam Christie, Bob Lingard.et.al).

I attended a lecture during my teacher training where the lecturer said governments write to a third-grade level to get information out to the general public. They don’t have literacy skills to share with your parents. You need to be able to take extra time with those students, You can’t.
