There is a pretty well known cautionary story in my area of study that is about a seasoned detective, very high ranking, been in the job for a long time and quite well dajusted, who was tasked to catalogue all of the tools of a particularly sadistic serial sexual offender and kidnapper. She did her job diligently – it took days, maybe even weeks. Once she was finished she went home and died by suicide with her issue revolver.

Do you find you brain gets used to it and whilst not normal its impact in general is lessened.
I don’t know if used to it is the right expression, because that’s counterproductive to what we want to achieve… maybe desensitised? I do have to watch what I say in mixed company because there is some desensitisation that occurs and our humor can be dark, so I need to think about my word choice when talking about my research in mixed company.
Yes desensitised is better wording
