Worked with one kid today, have supported he and his twin before. He was “homeschooled” and missed five years of formal education, but the parent was actually trying to “fix” what she perceived as something wrong with the boys. So when they started at school, they thought themselves dumb, stupid etc. Apart from the shame of not knowing things their peers do, there’s also that deep trauma of family culture.

Here’s the part where the system is failing, because those kids need 1:1 support for a revised curriculum, and don’t receive it. Today he was writing words with no idea what the words said. In fairness, they were complicated words like contravene, contraband, contraption, contraindication (which even the teacher couldn’t pronounce).
