A prospector in WA’s Goldfields has found a rare piece of cosmic debris known as an australite, which formed hundreds of thousands of years ago. Jim Miles was prospecting for gold in “the middle of nowhere”, about 150 kilometres north-east of Kalgoorlie, when he discovered the black object on the ground. He quickly made contact with Curtin University about his discovery and has donated the australite to the Space Science and Technology Centre in Perth, where planetary scientist Aaron Cavosie will take a closer look. The same day Mr Miles made contact about the find, PhD student Sophie Deam came into Dr Cavosie’s office with an australite she found during a recent search for a meteorite on the Nullarbor.
