• Patients who contracted COVID-19 but did not develop lymphopenia experienced no significant increase in recurrence risk.
• Baseline lymphopenia resulting from cancer treatment is an independent predictor of recurrence, and COVID-related lymphopenia adds additional risk.
• Viral infection can trigger a cytokine storm that leads to T cell exhaustion and decreased immune surveillance against cancer cells.
