So why are they using them in the UK?
It doesn’t make up any significant part of the UK’s storage. Capital costs per kWh are around 100 times higher than lithium ion.
But (from my very brief investigation of this subject) they aren’t used for storage. They are used to smooth out short term fluctuations in demand, which since the UK is heavily investing in them, I presume they do efficiently.
How they work better than batteries for this, I have no idea.
