Turner’s The Fighting Temeraire

Depicts this old battleship being towed up the Thames by a paddlewheel steam tug, to be broken up for scrap.

Turner was a fan of the new-fangled steam power but also nostalgic in his way. So it’s a lament for the past (Temeraire had taken part in the Battle of Trafalgar, nearly 40 years earlier) but also a welcoming of the new era.

I much prefer Constable.
