The things that you’re able to read on your table(t)
It ain’t necessarily so
I didn’t actually learn that, I briefly learned that:
… banning smoking for those born in 2009 or later …
has been tried once before – in New Zealand. And the New Zealand smoking ban was seen as a failure for a number of predictable reasons: it created a black market in cigarettes; whilst smoking was previously unpopular with younger people, now that it was illegal it became “cool” and “rebellious”. Ultimately in New Zealand it was abandoned after two years.I learned that the legislation had been passed, but the ban had not actually started, and the legislation was withdrawn by the new incoming government in 2023, largely because it would have meant finding about $1 billion tax revenue from somewhere else, plus a little bit of influence from the tobacco industry.
All of which I probably knew 3 years ago, but I had forgotten.
