Today was one of those rare days where you get to see a lot of medals. Some unassuming people that you talk to regularly suddenly surprise you with a chest full of Vietnam war medals. Even today, one of the only two active life members in our brigade had extra medals on. I’ve known him for 15 years, and we work together at least once a fortnight, but he’s never mentioned his service in Kuwait or the middle east, wtf? From what little I know it, people who have served in the military don’t talk about it, unless asked or when with others who also served.
I always wanted to ask mr kii’s friend who was a sniper in Central America and South America what it was like. A lovely man, but I think his PTSD kept him very low-key.
Yeah, I’m finding that as a general rule, those who served in the military overseas, either tell you all about their time a cook or mechanic, but the ones who actually served on the battleground say nothing. They don’t bring it up and even when asked, try to change the subject.
