“The Sweeney” is a nickname for the UK Metropolitan Police’s elite Flying Squad, derived from Cockney rhyming slang (“Sweeney Todd” = Flying Squad). Formed in 1919 to target armed robbery, the unit gained fame for handling dangerous criminals and was immortalized by a gritty 1970s TV show of the same name.
