By Tuesday night, the world will have a clearer picture on just how firm Trump’s stranglehold over the Republican Party still is, and just how broken the institutions of US democracy really are.

A vote is taking place to determine who the Republican Candidate will be for Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District at the November midterms. A small and historically irrelevant rural district that has now become the most expensive House primary campaign in US political history.

Trump won this Congressional district with 67% of the vote in 2024. However, it has been held since 2012 by a man I’ve written about before, Thomas Massie.

A traditional conservative and libertarian leaning Republican who captured the nation’s attention by standing up to Trump on government spending, foreign wars, and crucially… the Epstein files. It has been Massie who has led the pursuit of the release of all Epstein related evidence, while calling out the President’s obvious obstructions.

He has also vociferously condemned Trump’s war on Iran, explicitly accusing Trump of yielding to Israel’s interests above America’s. Very few of Massie’s other principles would align with the average Trump critic, but it’s the fact this man has demonstrated a willingness to stand by his principles in defiance of an intense campaign of personal abuse and political attacks from the President that has elevated this unassuming yet somehow fearless legislator to cult hero status by many who see him as a vestige of a bygone era where Republicans demonstrated independence from the President.

Trump has, of course, endorsed the challenger to Massie, former Navy SEAL Ed Gallrein, who opened his campaign by declaring “This district is Trump Country. The president doesn’t need obstacles in Congress — he needs backup. I’ll defeat Thomas Massie, stand shoulder to shoulder with President Trump, and deliver the America First results Kentuckians voted for,”

The primary challenge has seen extraordinary investment from those loyal to Trump, eager to do his bidding and purge the incalcitrant Massie from the Party. The Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, has travelled to the district to campaign for Gallrein, a move that is almost illegal for a representative of the military.

$32 million has so far been spent on advertising for the primary, with at least $9 million coming from The American Israel Public Affairs Committee and other pro-Israel interest groups; an unprecedented level of foreign meddling that is directly targeting one of the few Republicans to publicly question the unconditional military support provided to Israel.
But the most extraordinary aspect of this story is that despite the resources being committed towards this one race, it serves almost no strategic purpose beyond punishing Massie for his defiance. Trump is sending a clear warning to everyone within the Republican Party; he remains in control and dissent is not tolerated.

Above all else, this vote is a litmus test for US democracy. If an incumbent and popular local Republican Congressman is unable to speak truth to power without being overwhelmed by the finances of compliant oligarchs and foreign powers, then US democracy is closer to its death throes than many fear.

But, if Massie prevails, however, the message sent to Republicans across the country might be strong enough to signal a shift in Republican support away from Trump, or at the very least, a recognition that his absolute power to end political careers may be waning.

A fact that in itself explains why Trump is so terrified of the result.
