Some biblical scholars believe that the Book of Revelations should be fired from the canon.
Let’s go to the tape.“The author of the Book of Revelation identifies himself only as “John”. Traditionally, this was often believed to be the same person as John the Apostle (John, son of Zebedee), one of the apostles of Jesus, to whom the Gospel of John was also attributed. The early-2nd-century writer Justin Martyr was the first to equate the author of Revelation with John the Evangelist.
Other early Christian writers, such as Dionysius of Alexandria and Eusebius of Caesarea, noting the differences in language and theological outlook between this work and the Gospel, discounted this possibility, and argued for the exclusion of the Book of Revelation from the canon as a result. The early Christian writer Papias appeared in his writings to distinguish between John the Evangelist and John the Elder, and many biblical scholars now contend that the latter was the author of Revelation. The majority view of modern scholarship is that the author of the Book of Revelation is not the same person as John the Apostle or John the Evangelist.”
Revelations was written by someone using hallucinogens.
It was written by someone familiar with the Nero Redivivis legend. The second coming/return of Nero. Nero died during the civil war of 68 CE. The rebellion started in the west and he was forced to flee Rome and try to escape east, where he still had supporters. Unfortunately for him he was surrounded by rebel forces and committed suicide rather than be captured and executed. However, legend arose that he had faked his own ndeath and had in fact fled east to Parthia. The legend persisted for decades after his death, that he was alive and well and making an alliance with Parthia in order to return with an army of Parthians and retake his throne and have revenge on his enemies. And his revenge was going to be terrible.
The writer of Revelation writes about this legend. It is the basis for the beast of Rome coming out of Babylon (Parthia) to lay waste and persecute the Christians. Things would get so bad that Jesus would have to make his second coming to put an end to the world order and establish the new kingdom of God on earth. The number of the beast being 666 is a direct reference to Nero.
However, it never happened because it was a myth. Nero did actually die in the year 68, and never managed a comeback. But if you read Revelation in the context of this legend it actually starts to make sense what he was getting at.
