I saw a man putting assorted items into the recycling bins on our street. I went out to take a look in our bin … a lot of it was not recyclable: soft plastic chocolate wrappers, blister packs. The packs were for leveliracetum so I figured he had some kind of mental health problem. I approached him peaceably and said “man, you can’t be putting non-recyclables in our yellowtops. I don’t mind you using our extra bin space but it has to be the right kind of stuff.”

He said that they’d taken away his yellowtop and replaced in with a large size redtop, because of his failure to put the right things in the right bins, but that it is better he put recyclables in other people’s recyclables bins.

I let that sit for a moment and then said, “my man, you know damned well that some of this is not recycable. You are going to fuck things up for us. We’ll get dinged for contamination and maybe end up losing our bins too. I know you have problems but is that you? I’m a person, can you think of me as a person for a moment?”

He claimed ignorance, I won’t say feigned because maybe he really did think this stuff was recyclable but I think it was amicable enough and that he might not do it again. I reiterated that I don’t mind him using our bins as long as it’s the right stuff and wished him a good night.

The items we put in bins should be recyclable. It isn’t our fault that they are made not to be.

lies, it’ll all be cycled in the fullness* of time
