In addition to all the other answers, surely the main difference is that electric cars are replacing an existing consumer of energy, and are much more efficient, whereas data centres are new consumers of energy, with questionable benefit.

With the destruction of the local water supply. The local residents have to purchase water as they can’t drink what is coming out of their taps.

Memo to Chris Bowen: Let the data centres make their own undrinkable water.
