So that scene in Titanic where the first mate calls “Hard to port” and the helmsman wrenches the wheel to right is actually correct.

I just remembered:

many years ago, the patrol boat that i was in was the one in the first series of ABC’s ‘Patrol Boat’.

We had a day out at the ABC studios, where we got to see the ‘interior’ side of things. Parts of the patrol boat interior ‘rebuilt’ (to an astonishing degree of accuracy) inside the studio for filming inside scenes, a cave made of ‘rocks’ and ‘boulders’ that you could lift with one hand, etc.

We also saw things like the sound and dubbing studios, and the film editing studio.

They ran a segment of film of an upcoming episode for us, to show what it was like in its ‘raw’ state and in its ‘edited’ state. When they ran the ‘edited’ and dubbed version we roared with laughter, because the voice-over order was ‘starboard fifteen’ and the boat immediately turned to port.

The editors were puzzled until it was explained. They hadn’t been aware of the discrepancy. They were grateful, and said that they could just ‘flip’ the video.

Then it was off to the pub at French’s Forest, for a booze-up with the cast.
