HMAS Advance (P 83) was an Attack-class patrol boat of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). Constructed during 1967 and commissioned into the RAN in 1968, Advance operated from Darwin and patrolled northern Australian waters.
During her career, the patrol boat shadowed a Soviet trawler, survived Cyclone Tracy, was used for filming of the television series Patrol Boat, and participated in the RAN’s first anti-terrorism patrol of the North West Shelf. Advance was replaced in 1980, but continued to operate as a training ship until she was decommissioned in 1988.
Advance was donated to the Australian National Maritime Museum, which has maintained her in an operational condition.
That’s her. Have seen her a couple of times, but not set foot aboard her since she’s been with the Museum.
She’s in Museum hands in the pic, as sh has the Red Ensign flying down aft.
Looking at the pic made me think of a particular episode. Sunday, along side at HMAS Waterhen. Bored out of our skulls.
From somewhere, the Chief Bosun’s Mate had acquired MANY tins of car polish.
We decided to polish the patrol boat. All 32.8 metres/107 feet of it.
And we did. Hull, upper works, gun, engine uptake, all of it.
Exhausted, we stood on the wharf, and admired our achievement.
A warship that glistened. Gleamed. Glowed in the afternoon sun.
We beheld a sight that none of us had seen before, and none have seen since.
Heh. Usually think of warships as being a drab matte.
