Kiama Council is urging the NSW government to assume responsibility for the road, saying it needs major safety upgrades. She said the road was in need of a significant overall safety upgrade, but the Kiama and Wingecarribee councils could not afford the complicated work. Cr Matters said the council had renewed its calls for the state government to take ownership of the road. “We need to avoid these tragedies on our roads and if the state government could take over this major connection road, that is what’s needed.”

A NSW Police spokesperson described the truck involved in last night’s fatality as a “heavy, rigid truck”. They said police would investigate whether it should have been on the road.

Melissa Matters says the councils in charge of the road can’t afford its upkeep. She urged people detouring via Jamberoo to check the signs the signs that detail long-standing heavy vehicle exclusions. “This road is not for heavy vehicles, buses or anything like that. It’s suitable for cars, mainly,” Cr Matters said.
