Just wondering if such a product could stimulate the car parts industry ?

It would be a raspberry pi or arduino type mini computer running on selectable 48V, 24V and 12V systems.

It would emulate older software in cars that have control units like engine management, climate control, traction control, cruise control, entertainment systems etc.

The software would be open source.

Another way to extend the system would be to allow flexible display systems to be swapped over with the older factory ones.

Almost any dashboard combination could be emulated via HD color screens that can be cut to size and shape.

As with the car computer the flexible display software would be open source.

One of the biggest car manufacturers is the VAG group and they would use shared software and control units across thier range. Mercedes shares its with Aston Martin, BMW and Toyota are sharing a car in the new supra.

What I am saying is that car manufacture is price sensitive, deals in huge amounts of units and are not afraid of pertnerships and parts sharing to take advantage of economies of scale, so what you are suggesting is already happening. Off the top of my head Boshe would be one of the biggest suppliers.

Yeah ok, but that is mostly for newer cars.

The system Im thinking of would be generic.

There are a lot of generic control units on the market.

Anyway just a thought.

There is diagnostic software that car repair places have that emulates software in a huge range of car makes and models. I’m not sure how close that is to what you’re thinking of.

My cruise control is after market, so I assume it has its own separate software.

I can also remember two TV programs (fiction, not fact) in which someone hacked the car control computer to kill the driver by brake failure. Open source could make that easier to hack.

I would imagine there are people around the world who are working on similar / same ideas.

already being done i believe

you’d want a fast arduino like a mega and ideally a concise programme programmed inactually c++ so the programme executes faster

you could write it in arduino but this would take more memory

any inputs would deally be drained by a 10k resistor so that spurious voltages that would occur don’t upset the brain
