Sorry about non-science topic.

I need to hang a mosaic on my bedroom wall. The mosaic is on cement sheet and weighs a hefty 2.2 kg.

How would you mount it?

I can’t screw or nail into the back of the mosaic, so any support wire or hook or loop would have to be glued on.
I don’t mind a nail hole in the wall, but I prefer not to attach it to the wall with silicone as that would damage the wall too much.

If double sided or mounting tape – which double sided or mounting tape?

use a plastic anchor that expands if for like gyprock walls, or the ones with spring-loaded wings, if you can’t go into wood.

the thing your hanging is in the very upper range of what’s what’s considered light (you have to think about what happens if falls on someone), so probably small strip of timber or whatever glued (or good quality silicon), go across enough of width, use that to put you string of wire in, drill holes at ends, whatever.

I wouldn’t trust adhesive anchors for anything near heavy.

Have a look at something like this:
https://www.bunnings.com.au/everhang-6kg-metal-mirror-clips_p3930582. You might need two or three sets of them, but some on the bottom of the piece, some on the top, and one on each of the sides will hold it up securely without damaging the piece.

Yes. A strip of timber glued across the width that I could screw into could work.

Agree.

Good try!
Unfortunately, that’s only up to 5 mm thick and the mosaic is 10 mm thick.

Can you frame it?

Otherwise I would suggest mounting it with a sort of narrow shelf, perhaps with a top rail if required; rather than trying to make some invisible mounting.

Put the the whole piece into a frame and either glue the back to it or hold it in place either with clips or corner covers

This method, screw 2 hanging loops to a thin board like this, then glue the whole board to the back of the mosaic.

Sit it on top of the chest of drawers so the furniture takes the weight. Put a couple of blobs of blutac on the back to hold it firm against the wall when the drawers are pulled in and out and the whole thing wobbles.

(Well, it didn’t have to involve drills and things did it?!)

Unfortunately this method means you can’t really put anything else on top of the chest of drawers or the mosaic gets hidden.

I have a lot of pictures hanging and all on nails. Forget the adhesive stuff, in my experience you find one day a picture on the floor, smashed glass everywhere and a sticky hook stuck to a bit of paint.

Naughty mosaic designer is the other Neutrino, Lizzy Neutrino, her second mosaic, she completed the third yesterday – a bird bath commissioned work for real money. She didn’t know how or where this one would be hung. She’s startlingly good at this.

Looking up “French Cleat”. Not a bad idea, actually a very good idea.

That’s a newy for me. Looks ideal for something that heavy. And Sikaflex don’t unstick.

I’d prefer to hang it without any frame.

mrs m has said definitely not French cleats. But I haven’t fully ruled it out yet. Sikaflex eh?

Nice. Not sure if I can, but it looks nice. Will try that too.

Happened to me once, but not using adhesive, pulled the hook out of the wall. Then looked at the picture and said “hey, that looks much better without the glass in front”. So re-hung it without the glass. Though I still need to repair the frame a bit. PS. It’s abstract art, and looks better upside down.

I ended up hanging it with … … velcro !

3M have a relatively new velcro-like product that thy claim can be used tn non-destructively hold pictures and mirrors that weigh up to 7.2 kg to walls.

This mosaic weighs 2.2 kg so I could have used 1/2 the product (3.6 kg capacity) but decided to play safe and use athe full 7.2 kg capacity.

This is the mosaic. I hope you agree that that’s a heck of a fantastic mosaic for a second attempt.

I have used these velcro strips a lot and I have found (through experience) that on porous substances they aren’t the best

Can I suggest your daughter try some pieces using water proof 12 v LED lights behind the glass ?

Create little chambers to control where the light goes etc

Also experiment with using diffuse covering over the LEDs to reduce their brightness, change their color a bit, add texture to the light etc

Ive always wanted to try that using ceramics.

It would look very effective in the dark.

I’d like to try that too. Just out of interest, why 12 volt? Isn’t 3 volts more normal?
I’d also like to put them inside the viola.
