How long does a neutrino take to travel through the planet from one side to the other side?
Almost the speed of light
You are imgining theree was nil interference.
I think that’s right. The speed of a neutrino through the Earth is identical to the speed of a neutrino through empty space, unless is hits something on the way through.
The first figure gives the neutrino speed for an energy in eV.
The second figure gives the standard solar model neutrino energy for an energy in MeV (that’s a logarithmic scale).
So, let’s take pp electron neutrinos with an energy of 0.3 MeV. And take neutrino mass to be 2 eV/c 2 (it may be less than this).
This formula then gives neutrino speed v.
√(1-v 2 / c 2 ) = 2/300000
The neutrino speed differs from c by 4 parts in 10 11
The second type of neutrino frequently observed in muon neutrinos generated as muons slam into the upper atmosphere. These have energies measured in GeV. Typically 2 to 5 GeV/c 2 .
