Maybe GPS locators should be put on some animals ?
Why?
There doesn’t seem to be a serious ongoing problem.

Leave it until it gets serious or do something before it gets serious?.

Well at least leave it until it becomes a mild problem.
After all, these tracking devices are annoying to the animals and interfere with their socialisation. You don’t use them unless truly necessary.

Surely by now they could come up with something that didn’t interfere with anything.

Haven’t heard of any silverback gorillas being stolen recently, so why not build similar observation pens, where people cannot get in and the animals cannot get out?

the answer to that is usually financial constraints and space. It is also really difficult to have the happy medium between good observation, privacy for the animals, adequate access for cleaning and feeding and security.
The meerkat enclosure at Perth Zoo is one of the best for the good balance and one of the few exhibits where there is no bars (but very high windows so kids can see at a low level where the meerkats tend to be. The rails are about chest height for the average adult. The person who stole the kit was lucky, probably had one or more accomplices and physically jumped/climbed the barrier… that is no easy task.
all of the collection are micro chipped, however I don’t now if the vet dept had managed to do that with this young one yet

A friend of mine texted me the day before and asked if we had a baby meerkat.. I said yes and she should bring her son to see it. She joked – why don’t you just bring it home and we’ll come to yours.. how had can it be to steal a baby meerkat?
we both felt terrbile the next day
however the facebook page that broke the news had heaps of people tagging their friends with ‘give it back’ as the comment

Using a radio tracking antenna is so old school.
Joke warning: they have to plug the animals in every second night to recharge the batteries.

We do. That’s what zoos are for. Anyone who steals an animal from a zoo instantly regrets it.
