The thread for all your bird and wildlife pictures.

I have some that aren’t too awful from the past fortnight, so may as well post them. (Does not include any already on the “Crap Bird Photos” facebook group).

The first bird pictured I can’t find in my bird book. Any ideas?

First one, probably Jacky Winter.

Last one Gang Gang cockatoo.

The echidna reminds me of Tasmania.

Jacky Winter – it fits ! Thank you muchly, I’ve never had a confirmed sighting of a Jacky Winter before in my life. It’s supposed to be found throughout Australia but in the past all I’ve been able to say is “little brown bird”.

Gang Gang – Yes. I’ve only ever seen Gang Gang cockatoos at Marysville and Gisborne, so it was number one on my hit list for this visit.

The echidna is BIG. Possibly the biggest I’ve ever seen, possibly the second biggest.

In the 2016 October ABBC bird bioblitz, only 507 Jacky Winter were seen in Australia, as against 662 Gang Gang Cockatoo and 10,711 King Parrot.
98 Jacky Winter were seen in Victoria, as against 220 Gang gang Cockatoo.

years ago I did a short course on wild animal photography and the person running it said that a motionless bird was like shooting fish in a barrel

Ooo, yes. Noice,

Had the opportunity to view a black duck nesting on the ground a mile away from a swamp, in mallee. Every time she left the nest, it was camouflaged and kept warm by a layer of down.

This was a pair nesting in a dry lake bed that used to be a Bayside council duck-pond, before the council pulled the plug on it.

A mate of mine had a black duck raise a brood in a box he had put at the top of a 20 metre Cedrus deodar in his yard in an attempt to grow some hooch years before.
He watched the process of the ducklings jumping out of the nest. One landed upside down and was conside3rably in disrepair for a good bit. The mother waited patiently until it gatheredc it’s senses and feet, then she proceeded to show them where the water was. A truck driver on this very busy section of the Kidman Way, screeched to a halt to allow them passage across the road.

Two weeks ago here it was mrs m who screeched to a half for the same reason. She waved frantically to the car behind to try to explain that it shouldn’t take that as an invitation to overtake.
