Sugar gliders were introduced to Tasmania around 180 years ago. They have contributed to the endangerment of the native swift parrots. The Tasmanian government is planning a cull of sugar gliders to protect the parrots.

I’m good with that.

I’m good with cat culls. Trap. Check for chip. No chip=euthanise.

And really deer started as rich man’s sport. And now deer have been spotted in Mt Nelson suburbs…standing in the middle of the road. I’m not even sure how you cull deer in built up areas.

“Swift Parrots are found in dry sclerophyll forests and woodlands, suburban parks and gardens and flowering fruit trees. In Tasmania, they are often among Tasmanian Blue Gum, Eucalyptus globulus. They roost communally, often in the same tree each night.”

that is basically lots of lowland areas facing north.

Although I have a lot of E.glob on my block and I don’t face north. I am wet sclerophyll.

Tasmania

Bruny Island Maria Island South-east Tasmania

Recently they have run free desexing of cats on Bruny. They have done a lot of feral trapping too. Makes sense to try and wipe out the gliders on Bruny.

Some idiot might have stroked his chin and said “It’s a nice island but it needs more sugar gliders. Haven’t seen any at all so I’ll get some from the mainland.”

Roughie’s onto something…
he’s been admonishing Yanks forever
‘over hijacking animals for the “exotic pets” trade.
so it’s an ironic turn about that the practice that all too often
ends in disaster might just be the key to saving their adorable lives.

Whether they are a pest in Tasmania, they are missing in action on large partrs of their mainland range. Why not send them to ther mainland?

The Americans will buy them as pets.

Why isn’t it saying “orange bellied parrots” rather than “swift parrots”?

Sounds like a good idea. Relocation is always preferable to killing. Relocating the orange bellied parrots looks good to me.

Cause they are two different endangered birds?
