Anyone else worried about the Sulawesi tsunami?

The earthquake was on land not under the ocean. And the ocean just offshore from that, that part that was shaken most vigorously, had some land between it and where the tsunami struck most violently.

I think that what we have here might be similar to the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, where the actual cause of the tsunami, a massive slow undersea land movement, was not picked up on the seismometers at all because it was too well lubricated.

Any thoughts?

Tunamis happen because of displacement and the tsunami warning was given before the tsunami hit. Apparently this tunami was caused by an undersea landslide. The Aceh one was a dramatic rise of the sea floor.

Different detectors for different types of earthquakes ?

How many different types of earthquakes are there ?

Do they have the one kilometer laser beam Earthquake detector ?

What are the different types of earthquakes?
https://www.quora.com/What-are-the-different-types-of-earthquakes

There are four different types of earthquakes: Tectonic, volcanic, collapse and explosion.

A tectonic earthquake is one that occurs when the earth’s crust breaks due to geological forces on rocks and adjoining plates that cause physical and chemical changes. A volcanic earthquake is any earthquake that results from tectonic forces which occur in conjunction with volcanic activity. A collapse earthquake are small earthquakes in underground caverns and mines that are caused by seismic waves produced from the explosion of rock on the surface. An explosion earthquake is an earthquake that is the result of the detonation of a nuclear and/or chemical device.

So three natural types and one man made.

Tectonics earthquakes have two main types injection or withdrawal

A volcano tectonic earthquake is an earthquake induced by the movement (injection or withdrawal) of magma. The movement results in pressure changes in the rock around where the magma has experienced stress. At some point, the rock may break or move.

The detectors need to cover all types.

Detecting Earthquakes is still a work in progress.

Improvements to sensitivity and identifying the type of earthquake can be made

Improvements to response times can also be made.

Or slow ones and fast ones. The fast ones are fractures – brittle failure.
The slow ones are plastic failure and take a minute or more.

I’m beginning to wonder if seismographs fail to predict tsunami strength in about 50% of cases.
And if seismographs fail to predict volcanic eruption strength in about 50% of cases.

I am aware that a seismograph 100 miles away didn’t record an earthquake I felt one night. When I did some asking around, I was told that if it was 1 on the scale and within a kilometre of the surface that only those standing directly on top of it would notice it.

https://www.9news.com.au/world/2018/10/08/02/38/indonesia-earthquake-tsunami-death-toll-increases-again

Death toll from Indonesian earthquake and tsunami revised to 1763.

two villages where homes were sucked into a sinkhole during the September 28 earthquake – remained unaccounted for.

Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho says an estimated 5,000 people from Petobo and Balaroa are missing. 380,000 people displaced.

Bodies are still being recovered, especially from ruins of buildings in the small city of Palu and from neighbourhoods hit by liquefaction, a phenomenon that turns the ground into a roiling quagmire, in the south of city.

Many hundreds of people are still buried in mud and debris in the south of Palu, where neighbourhoods were obliterated by liquefaction and desperate relatives have been seeking help to find loved ones.

Images from the tsunami are just horrific.
