This Crazy Ambitious Timeline Shows When And How Elon Musk And Space X Plan to Colonise Mars

That’s the spirit with which he founded SpaceX, his rocket company, in 2002. Musk was frustrated that NASA wasn’t doing more to get people to the red planet – and concerned a backup plan for humanity wasn’t being developed (for when Earth becomes an uninhabitable wasteland).

All sorts of things might happen if they ever do set up living conditions on Mars.

It is not NASA’s role to come up with a backup plan for the human species just in case we fuck up this planet.

Primary effort should be expended in preventing the Earth becoming an uninhabitable wasteland, not moving on to some other planet. But that is far less sexy.

Mars can’t be terraformed into a habitable planet anyway. There is not enough stuff there to sustain it.

Has anyone thought of evolving life to suit conditions on Mars ?

That might be one way to go.

I’d hope it might be a place of cooperation not competition and everyone is equal and hatreds are left behind even if just for the fact being a dick on Mars means you and everyone else could die

That’s right. That’s why we should all rush around carrying placards saying “stop the lava”.

Or ‘no to the sun becoming a red giant’.

I agree. The rejection of Mars Direct by NASA was a mistake. A perfectly understandable mistake because of the risk. Eg. Only two astronauts when NASA insists on three.

But changing the plan to three astronauts and adding much greater cost and complexity was never going to fly.

Lean, mean and speedy is the way to go.

I’m fairly certain that there’s be a stampede of volunteers for a one way mission.

You could auction the spot for the first person to step onto Mars.

Indeed there are, the Beep interviewed some of them recently.
These were not death row inmates they were mostly scientists who were quite prepared to die there.
One of the interview questions was “if after two years an opportunity arose for you to go back to earth on a cargo vessel would you take it”
The answers were varied but most said they didn’t know.

The ‘Mars One’ consortium wants to fund it through tv advertising.

BRISTOL, Tenn. – A man who police say was run over with a lawn mower while trying to kill his son with a chain saw has had to have his leg amputated.

The Bristol Herald Courier reports that a warrant for 76-year-old Douglas Ferguson couldn’t be served until Tuesday because of the severity of his injuries.

According to a Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office release, officers called to a home June 28 found Ferguson bleeding from his leg and head. A preliminary investigation indicated he had tried to attack his son with a running chain saw while he son mowed the yard.

Detectives say the father and son had an ongoing feud.

Mars Direct is not a one way mission. Just a dangerous one.

Not greatly different to other dangerous pursuits on Earth – such as mountain climbing.

Why do it half arsed going to Mars, set up a permanent base and continue to expand it.
