It’s been known to have a solid core for as long as I can remember. Seismic PSP waves if I remember correctly. P waves in the liquid outer core are converted to S waves in the solid inner core and back to P waves on leaving the inner core.
Later, the technique was refined to also observe the slow surface waves (Raleigh waves) on the outer surface of the inner core, and it was discovered that this surface is far from uniform, almost as complicated as the crust of the Earth.
This article talks about J waves. What the heck are J waves?

Well she should be famous
Ah, a J wave is just an S wave in the inner core.
The inner core has been known to be solid since 1936.
The new paper says we have been using the wrong speed for S waves in the hnner core, they actually travel 2.5% more slowly.
My apologies, the complicated surface I was thinking of is the D” layer which sits on the outer surface or the outer core not the outer surface of the inner core.

That’s what electrical engineers call imaginary waves, isn’t it?

ROFL.
Look up “J waves” on the internet and you get articles on ECGs. It’s a heart malfunction diagnostic tool.
