Astronomers spot the youngest known pulsar ever, and boy is it pretty

Many of the objects NASA and other scientific bodies choose to study in space are incredibly old, but that’s not the case with Kes 75. Located a mere 19,000 light years from Earth, Kes 75 is a ultra-dense chunk of a star that went supernova, and now scientists are calling it the youngest known pulsar in the Milky Way galaxy.

The youngest known pulsar, really? The Crab pulsar is a mere 964 years old. And pulsars can be younger than that, from Figure 1 of https://www.worldscientific.com/doi/pdf/10.1142/S2010194513011124 we have pulsars with a “characteristic age” as small as 3 years. This isn’t necesssarily the same as true age, but “characteristic age” tends to be a bit larger than true age.

Is Kes 75, at 19,000 light years from Earth, pretty?

Oh, I see.

Possibly. Possibly not. Estimated to be 500 years old., which is old for an Ocampa, they have an average lifespan of only 9 years.

Sorry, I’m being silly.
