Subject: Scientists witness crows building tools from various parts for the first time
>>Crows and their close relatives ravens are known to be quite intelligent, with scientific experiments showing how they can hitch rides on bald eagles and remember the faces of captors. New research has now uncovered a previously unknown ability, with crows being observed building tools from multiple parts for the first time ever.
In what is described as an astonishing mental feat, scientists at the University of Oxford and Max Planck Institute for Ornithology have watched on as New Caledonian crows assembled implements from smaller component parts.<<

Yeah but, were the birds trained to do it?
Training the birds to do it is completely different to them working it out.
Cockatoos can be trained to ride bikes and perform all sorts of very clever tricks.

>With no assistance at all, four of the eight crows were able to assemble one small piece into another to build a composite tool of the length required to reach the food. The scientists took things even further, replacing the components with even smaller pieces, with one enterprising crow by the name of Mango able to combine three and even four components to get the job done.

When they say no assistance I reckon they are lying, I reckon they demonstrated to the birds how to do it and the rewards involved.

If so the entire experiment is invalid.

Crows have been observed in the wild learning from each other in regards to tool making
They cut a specific shape out of a leaf to use as a tool to reach insects hiding in logs

Isn’t replacing the components with smaller pieces, assisting the birds?

Wasn’t the idea to see if they had the smarts to join them together as on their own the smaller pieces weren’t useful.

It’s the fitting together to make the tool that is the important bit, it shows imagination, memory and purpose.

The long term project is to get them to assemble Ikea furniture and see what they do when one screw or plug is missing

I know they can pull things apart. As I reported here last night, I watched a raven go to a blackbird nest in our machinery shed last evening, drag out a baby, drop it on the ground and pull it to bits. It was less successful at putting it back together again, except in the form of more raven…
