It is with the greatest of sadness that I, along with the family of Brett Yeates, would like to inform all of our friends of his unexpected but peaceful passing this weekend. RIP beautiful man, forever my soulmate xxx

Kerryn Lovell is feeling devastated with Brett Yeates.

Life is way too short so make the most of it and don’t waste a second is what this man has taught me. Be strong and fight with everything you have for what you need. Treasure the people in your life as one day you blink and they are gone. Missing one of my best mates tonight and cannot believe you are gone. RIP Brett Yeates you were a beautiful, kind and strong man and the best friend a girl could ever have. Missing you so much xx So much love to Julie Walker, Brett’s family and friends and especially Anzac and the very loved cat xx

This really is fucked :(

He was always very helpful to me with my questions about diabetes and amputations and stuff like that, not only here but sometimes through private messages. He always had a positive outlook on things.

This is profoundly sad news, really feel for his partner and the rest of the family.

I know. I used to use him as an example of how fucked in the head I am. How he who was truly fucked of body could fight so hard to normal and good of brain. Whereas I have legs and kidneys and crumble and fall apart at the slightest boo. He was inspirational.

I remember a lot of house renovation, gardening, different jobs, moving house a number of times, showing his car models..

He kept so active and enthusiastic, we tended to forget how ill he was and how dependent on those transplants which never came :(

But he was immersed in life right to the end, no moping for that one :)

My sympathies to Mrs SS, Anzac, the cat and everyone else. He’s going to be missed that’s for sure.

Not only a positive person but a very generous person. He was one of the first to get in his trusty ute and fill it up with many needed items for Joey when her property was burnt out a few years ago..

I am still feeling quite stunned about this news :’(

I had several opportunities to meet him when he lived in Tasmania, but me being a hermit & weirdo, never got around to it.

He put me in touch with a local friend of his when I needed help to get rid of those roosters. Friend and his sons tried to catch them (without success) but it was a good morale booster :)

It’s a very sad day.

Strange how you can feel so down about the passing away of a person you have never met. When I was in hospital and just after he sent me a few massages asking if everything was OK and if there was anything he could offer to help. I really appreciated that, I was kind of feeling a bit lost at the time. My problems aren’t even half as bad as what he had, but he was always so positive, and I guess I did draw upon that to take a positive approach to my own situation. I think i am going to really miss that.

Friends in the forum are just as much friends as those elsewhere.

We say we “never met” him but in fact we’ve known him for many years, since he was in his early 20s.

Not surprising when you lose real friends that your grief is also real.

I suppose for me Forum Grief is tinged with the thought that we didn’t appreciate the person enough. We peep in here for company most days and we expect everyone else will be peeping in from time to time, but there’s inevitably a certain detachment about it. Even people you’ve been interacting with for a very long time are to some extent clickable handles rather than 3D human beings.

Didn’t chat with that person long enough? Well there’s always next time. Smiled at their comment but didn’t bother posting a smile? Never mind, they understand.

Then when they’re gone….well as the song says, you don’t what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone.

Good idea. I was racking my brain to think this morning of what charity covers kidneys.

I tried donating to transplant Australia, but their monetary donation page seems to be broken. Diabetes is next best, I guess.

He was kicked off the list earlier this year by some crazy doctor but then after intervention from Mrs SS and another specialist, kicked back on and I think he was right at the top of it.

But Stumpy knew the score, he’d had a number of emergency admissions in recent years, including being air-lifted.

This one. And tell your relatives that you wish to be an organ donor. So they don’t try to over ride your wishes.

Bugger. This is really sad news. Whatever happened, however he was feeling, Stumpy was always upbeat. If more people were like Stumpy the world would be a better place.

I think Shakespeare said it best:

He was a man, take him for all in all,
I shall not look upon his like again.

Such innovation. It used to be recorded on my drivers licence (IIRC even when the licences were paper). But they don’t record it there any more. I was sent a form, which I returned, signed.

Not just good things to come, he lived a good and active life regardless.

I think he went through a bleak patch after moving to SA and being without a job for an extended period. But he rallied and started training to be a mechanic. Then eventually found this irrigation job, similar to the work he was doing in Tas.

Apart from the ever-present need for new organs and the touch-&-go situation until then, all seemed to be going OK, despite the uncertainty regarding when he and Mrs SS might be properly together again, with her work being elsewhere.

I did a resume for him then, and created a LinkedIn profile which he used to reconnect with mates he used to work with.

I asked him a few weeks ago if he was alright, after he posted pics of his face being so swollen. His response was something along the lines of “just another day in the office”! I wondered them if this was nearing the end, but I’d forgotten about it til I read about his death this morning.

Stumpy, mate. Stumpy. I’m going to really miss you and your contributions to this little community. Your positivity, your energy, your getting stuff done. With so much bad shit going on in your life, you kept it together and will be a shining beacon for times to come. I’m sad I didn’t get the bike done in time to visit on the way to the salt. I know you’d‘ve enjoyed that; you said so. I’ve disappointed myself that I didn’t get my finger out. Even with your positivity and energy lighting the way, I still didn’t get it. Sorry.

Before he left Tassie, Stumpy had a nice Hammond organ he was looking for a home for, and offered it to me. He was wanting to bring it round.

But I was ashamed of my decrepit little cottage and its grotty bathroom facilities and so I didn’t want visitors apart from the family.

I told him I had no room for it (which was true) but I’m now wishing I hadn’t been such a self-conscious weirdo. I’m sure he would have been very pleasant company.

Man, I’m going to miss you. And your provocative sense of humour. And how quick you were with those captioned pictures. Even though I didn’t agree with some of them, I admired your ability to conjure them so quickly. And some of them made me laugh. Sometimes a naughty laugh, too…

You never really got that I didn’t give much of a shit about fast cars (even though I’d been to Bathurst car races several times and built race cars), but you understood that I loved motorbikes of all types. No matter whether they were fast or not. But fast = better. You got that.

And you kept me laughing about your oh-so-Bogan ute. Found On a Rubbish Dump ute. All dressed up with flags and aerials and extra lights and stickers shiny bull-bar and stuff.

I discussed your positivity and energy earlier. All that stands.

Thanks for being. Thanks for being you. Thanks for shining your light into my life.

Man, I’m going to miss you.

He passed on the night of Oct 26. Wouldn’t have been long after his final post here 😭

;(

Fuck it, I’ve got something in my eye.

The funeral was set for 2pm SA time, so they’d be an hour into it by now.

I remember Stumpy quoting this song, and talking about it with obvious affection, so that’s good enough for me to call it his.

The Ringing of the Steel

. Blows the froth off a Coopers .

Vale Stumpy.

I will be raising a glass to him later.. I usually do not get involved, but I felt compelled to say something to Julie, however I didn’t want it to be pre funeral so I just posted now.
I hope if you don’t agree you will forgive me for my inclusion of the whole forum…

I think I can speak for the holiday forum and say that we are all thinking about you (and family) today and offer strength through this time. Brett was a valued member and much loved. We will be raising a glass to him at FNDC each in our own ways and time zones. So sorry for your loss of this amazing human, we are better off for having had the pleasure and honour of knowing him over the years. xx
