Subject: Complementary colours?

Looking for a colour that goes well with Dulux “Ashville” and it was suggested that I look for a “Complementary colour”.

Any colour theories that say what colour goes well with which?
Can I calculate a complementary colour by simply subtracting the RGB values of Ashville from 255,255,255?

It’s a misleading term because complementary colours are actually maximum contrast colours:

Complementary colors are pairs of colors which, when combined, cancel each other out. This means that when combined, they produce a grayscale color like white or black. When placed next to each other, they create the strongest contrast for those particular two colors. Due to this striking color clash, the term opposite colors is often considered more appropriate than “complementary colors”.

I’d reckon that’d need a bright colour to go with it. It’s a bit dowdy.

You could get it double tinted.

When I was doing high school art opposite colours on the wheel were called contrasting colours. At uni arts they were called complementary. I prefer contrasting. It means something.

I got an RGB reading on that of 200,199,199.

I think I need more than just a dark grey, in the sense of either complementary RGB or double tint. Double tint is a good idea worth following up, though.

Mrs m suggests looking up the “Colour me beautiful” book.

Anne suggests opposite a charcoal grey would be a yellow or mauve or coral, though Ashville is a lot lighter than charcoal grey.

The pale yellow with it might sing if you throw some navy blue accessories at it.

We think a grey-green or grey-blue. But that is really Mr buffy’s idea. I don’t do the colour selections around here. I suspect I have a mosaic retina, combination colourblind and not. I’m not a good matcher and there is deuteranomaly in my bloodlines.

I still reckon a bright, bold colour. Bright Red. Bright Yellow. etc. Bright, strong.

Look up web: 10 of the best colours to pair with grey.

https://www.homedit.com/colors-to-pair-with-gray/

Seafoam (blue green grey)
Marshmallow (fluffy white)
Grass (more blue that I’d call “grass”)
Midnight (black)
Sun (yellow)
Rose (pink)
Aqua (blue)
Cherry (bright red)
Violet (purple)
Coral

So it’s sort of pair with either a darker grey, a blue-green-grey, or a brilliant hue.

In addition look up color apps, color tools, color management etc on Apples website or on Googles Android apps website

Smartphone apps can use the camera lens to sense color and give readouts for different aspects of the color your looking at.

Ta. Looking up links. Colour Apps on Google Android seems most useful.

It seems as if almost any colour can be paired with grey.
