Subject: Kirchhoff ( Lewin vs ElectroBOOM)

It appears that MIT Proffessor Dr Walter Lewin suggests that Kirchoff’s Voltage Law (KVL) does not hold under certain conditions.

The electrical engineering site ElectroBOOM has just done a video on it, and for those who have even a slight interest it’s decent viewing. I’m normally not a great fan of electro, but this one is very good. He may be wrong, and Lewin right, but I’m putting my money on electro.

I’ll admit that this is the first time I’d even realised that people questioned Kirchoff and it came as a bit of a surprise.

I just found the original video that electro was replying to. The comments section is very weird, and I now understand why electro made his video as a response.

I am an exponent of the ‘ poor probing’ theorem, mainly as I’ve suffered from the experience quite a few times over the years. It’s very embarrassing when you are sitting there, scratching your head over a strange result on your test equipment that is making you pull your hair out. and another engineer comes along, has a brief look at your setup or measuring techniques, flicks a switch or tells you to just shorten that probe a bit, and the problem goes away. You never forget and won’t suffer from that exact problem again.

I consider KL to me aphorismically, fundamentally, true, much as conservation of momentum is.

If it failed, it would mean something was seriously broken in the universe.

That video has confirmed a least one thing for me.

We really need an alternative You-tube.

So essentially, the lack of a single voltage source (or bunch of sources) means that there is a gradual shift of voltages all around the loop?

Also, Lewin could easily have gotten senile – his judgement certainly is impaired WRT whether or not to sexually harass female students, apparently :-/

They are progressively increasing the amount of advertising.
And whith no competition, why wouldn’t they?

Just as we should all be using Bing to keep Google honest, we should all be using something that isn’t YouTube.

Bing is terrible. There are better alternatives.

Looks like there was some conclusion, or at least a truce, in this saga.
