not something i’ve given much attention, the different sorts etc, history of, origins etc. In fact I had to look it up to check if curtains could be called blinds. That naive.

the idea seems straightforward enough, a (adjustable) screen, for windows. Of course there are decorative aspects and more too, often.

I guess my eyelids are blinds, of sorts. Seems obvious.

i’m wondering what the first protoblinds were, way back on the african savanna, and back further. Other primates, and perhaps other mammal relatives. Man’s best friend, the canine, do they have blinds, or express any behavior that suggests a feel for what a blind does.

avians too, i’m sure i’ve seen them put foliage between me and them

side blinders are permanent.
blinds can be manually manipulated.

The first windows were literally Os that the wind blows through. Window glass came very much later. So the first blinds would have been tent flaps.

“in the 13th century BC, the earliest windows were unglazed openings in a roof to admit light during the day. Later, windows were covered with animal hide, cloth, or wood. Shutters that could be opened and closed came next.”

Emulating eyelids.

I don’t know which came first, windows or curtains.

The first curtains would have separated a single dwelling into rooms, so that two families could maintain privacy while living in the same house.

You are corect. Curtains or enclosures within a cave were mentioned in the sci-fantasy novel trilogy by Jean Auel, Clan of the Cave Bear. I do think she did her research and added her own license but it is not hard to envisage that young bloods would not want the old and young to watch what went on between the sheets.
