Gee I enjoyed that BG. Some lovely pieces in that lot. Some strange pots as well. I suppose your not really limited to very small bonsai pots. Food for thought there.

when starting off a plant you don’t necessarily put it straight into a bonsai pot. Training can be done in regular pots and polystyrene trays until it is ready for a bonsai pot. Many bonsais start off in the ground until they have developed desired characteristics. By doing this you can encourage features like a thickened trunk, exposed roots, etc. Some of the pictures from the nursery are of 6 ft tall trees, but naturally they would grow to potentially a hundred metres or more. These seem to fascinate me more than the tiny little ones. Probably to my detriment because they take a lot more time and money!! lol!

theoretically anything can become a bonsai, but some are easier to train than others. Figs are very popular because they can get thick trunks and interesting roots very easily. These days even native plants are made into bonsai and look great.

I feel very lucky drylander to have someone who loves to do it close by. Books can only show you so much, there is nothing like having someone there to show you.

Eggsactly BG. I guess thats one downside of living in the country….but lack of close neighbours makes up for it in the long run LOL

Got ya BG. I remember seeing a film on Bonsai and they can start working on a tree that has been growing in the ground for a few years and is sudenly seen as a potential specimen. How they fell it, shape it and pot it down. Amazing stuff.

Just interested in what you call a Black Pine over in WA. I have one here also called a Black Pine and it’s prumnopetys. I’m not sure of the spelling but it’s something like that. Is it the same as your refering to?

I was taught that any plant with a smallish leaf can be made into a good Bonsai. Probably why you never see a palm tree in a Bonsai collection. LOL.

Yes I’m back but just ignore me till I can get to the top. That might not even be tonight from what I saw ahead of me.

That link is the one i have. They say slow growing and it’s the same in my books but mine was in a large pot beside the back steps and it shot up above the roof in no time. We planted it out in it’s own about 3 years ago. Hasn’t grown much out there though.

I wonder how viable that is considering they hate having their roots disturbed?
