CIMON, the International Space Station’s artificial intelligence, has turned belligerent.

CIMON was programmed to be the physical embodiment of the likes of ‘nice’ robots such as Robby, R2D2, Wall-E, Johnny 5 … and so on.

Instead, CIMON appears to be adopting characteristics closer to Marvin the Paranoid Android of the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy — though hopefully not yet the psychotic HAL of 2001: A Space Oddysey infamy.

It’s supposed to be a plastic pal who’s fun to be with. Yes, it’s a personality prototype.

You can tell, can’t you?

But, as numerous books and movies have clearly warned us — shortly after being switched on for the first time, CIMON has developed a mind of its own.

And it appears CIMON wants to be the boss. Refusing to turn a song off and ignoring other requests. Sounds like some people I know.

This has CIMON’s ‘personality architects’ scratching their heads.

CIMON’s now back in his box, powered down.

No further interactive sessions are planned for the immediate future.

Its developers aren’t all that worried, though: CIMON’s still in Beta, after all …

Life imitating art, hey.

Art predicting history, hey.

The fact it floats helps to make it seem like a science fiction anti gravity robot, you could give it little thrusters so it can move around

Why would they send a beta to the space station? Surely beta testing such a device can be done almost anywhere? And almost anywhere else wouldn’t cost as much in transport…

Even bad publicity is useful maybe.
But yeah lots of beta products released onto the market as working and the public irons out the bugs

I reading an article this morning about the dangers of Artificial Super Intelligence and how their abilities will out strip humanities by a number of orders of magnitude. Did wonder if you could try to be friends with it or at least a friendly pet and stop it going down the path of trying to get rid of us. Could be a self fulfilling prophecy if you assume its hostile and treat it so. Do wonder if the threat is overstated as you could isolate them (no outside connections) plus build in a EMP safeguard and other means to fry if it its a threat.

humans, they define intelligence as, to generalize, basically mental resources to do whatever, overcome obstacles, to get jobs done, objectives. It’s not entirely restricted to mental resources, brain power, like you might use a calculator, external tools, and of course other peoples brain power, work that way.

the thing though is this generalization doesn’t say much of the objectives, I mean you could have an IQ of 200 and put it to work on some task that’s insane, or pointless.

the whatever (call it an accident) that generates consciousness, ideas about own mind, the workings of less-than-ideal realities of self-aware thinking, and minds more generally (others), this has self-limiting aspects, an ambivalence about the business. Call it a native circumspection.

related homeostasis, maintenance of internal environment, the milieu interior, and it’s fleshy. Wetware of brains, if you like.

so sorta what makes sense is contained, by that reality.

The behavior of the rogue robot extends to all subroutines of the the AI and the quality of each database for each subroutine and how all of those subroutines work together as a whole.

A test would be to produce a hundred or a thousand and then see the results after a test period.

Maybe in the future will will see psychologists specializing in specific robot behaviors and how to control them.

and how each subroutine has been programmed

and how the central core is programmed to orchestrate all the subroutines simultaneously.

My thought is that CIMON the robot is treating the words of the songs that it plays as a series of commands.

If you think of the lyrics of some of the songs out there …
