For anyone interested in the creation and spread of the English language, there’s a series of 8 episodes, all on YouTube.

It explains interesting things, like where and how the English language formed, and why there’s a silent k in knife.

If you care to seek them out…
…Bill Bryson has published a few books
..and resulting audiobooks, on the subject as well.

The Mother Tongue

Book Overview:

With dazzling wit and astonishing insight, Bill Bryson—the acclaimed author of The Lost Continent—brilliantly explores the remarkable history, eccentricities, resilience and sheer fun of the English language. From the first descent of the larynx into the throat (why you can talk but your dog can’t), to the fine lost art of swearing, Bryson tells the fascinating, often uproarious story of an inadequate, second-rate tongue of peasants that developed into one of the world’s largest growth industries.

Just finished the last episode. It was quite good.

One thing, if I were Canadian I’d be pissed. Didn’t get a mention at all as a version of English. I think there was one mention of Canada across the 8 episodes. Does the place even exist?
