I wish to plant a persimmon tree. I want to get a “SQUISHY, SQWASHY” type. I have been advised that “Nightingale: and “Dai Dai Maru” would be the one. Is this correct.

Google seems to agree. I have heard that the old astringent types can be hard to source.
if they are astringent types then yes. Non-astringent can be eaten before they get to the squishy-squashy stage, but will get there in due course if not eaten first.
Persimmon hyakumi.. in my backyard., Astringent .. large and very very tasty when ripe.. All the birds love it.

It is basically only half a tree notice all the fruit is to one side..
This is due to the fact that an emormous Weeping mulberry is situated just to the nnw of the persimmon.

congrats its an impressive (half) tree – is your soil sandy? – well drained ?- because i planted a persimmon on this solid clay and it just would not grow.
I bought a small grated tree in a pot this year but it did not survive Melbourne’s heat wave :(

It’s the grating that would have killed it BG.

What a great crop, RB! If that’s only half a tree I wouldn’t like to imagine a whole one!

My Grandparents had one big enough for us kids to climb.
My soil is calcerous clay which used to have sand on top, is pretty skeletal and full of lumps of calcrete.
The topsoil is all added, mainly grape marc.

I think a lady called Soft and Squashy (former Forumites will remember her) had soil like that in South Australia…she was a tremendous worker in her garden, she was…

i’m not sure but that doesn’t sound like good drainage.
i might have to try planting another persimmon here .
