Customs officials at New York’s John F Kennedy international airport say they found 70 live finches hidden inside hair rollers.

Authorities say a passenger arriving from Guyana on Saturday had the songbirds in a duffel bag.

The New York Times reports officials believe the birds were brought to the US to participate in singing contests. Customs officials say people bet on how many times the finches chirp, and a winning male finch can sell for up to $10,000.

The birds were turned over to veterinarians to the US agriculture department, and the passenger was sent back to Guyana.

US Customs and Border Protection says bird smuggling could threaten agriculture through the possible spread of diseases such as bird flu.

Customs officers have seized about 184 finches this year.

Or, I dunno … any fucking thing that you can bet on legally now. The birthweight of a princess, the number of dot balls in the 31st over of the Chandaghar derby match …

(my mother used to lament that one of my brother’s would bet on two flies crawling up a wall.) (I see your point on fucking things you can bet on legally already without pinching finches.)

Same here. There have been a lot of dogs stolen from backyards recently. Also dog baiting is rampant: people throwing poisoned dog treats over the fence.

Wtf is wrong with people?

i think there must be more than one species and the problem is we are all mixed together living in the same space rather than different planets.

It’s just an excuse. It’s really part of ‘Trump’s wall’. Don’t want them fhurrin birds comin’ in here, stealin’ jobs from good hard-workin’ ‘Merican birds.

Really, betting money on birds chirping? I mean, i’ve been starved for entertainment in my time, but sitting around counting bird chirps…

Somebody would decide that some exotic species of fly was better at wall climbing that the lazy local varieties so they’d start illegally importing flies.

Why does anybody even bother with FB anymore? It’s not question of ‘will my ‘personal stuff’ be compromised?’, it’s a question ‘how soon until…?’
