They just crossed the start line and the lazy bastards are all having a good sit down on the edge of the boat and admiring the view, when shouldn’t it be all hands on deck?

They are using the international standard of nautical miles which is better than millimetres.
Comanche has eeked out a 4nm lead.

Tussle for line honours between Comanche and Wild Oats, with Blackjack and Infotrack hot on their heels.

What I want to know is why are all the sails black?

News reports:

Wild Oats XI takes line honours in Sydney to Hobart race, amid accusation of rule breaking.

Potential controversy emerges over Wild Oats XI’s Sydney to Hobart win.

Wild Oats XI caught in controversy after celebrating Sydney to Hobart victory

From those:

Black Jack said Wild Oats XI’s Automatic Identification System (AIS) — which per the rules must be operational at all times — was not on for the entire race.

The Mark Richards-skippered yacht crossed the line in Hobart at 8.07am on Friday, outpacing three super maxis in one of the closest races in the event’s history.

Wild Oats XI was first past the post last year but was stripped of line honours after a rule breach at the race’s start, with a subsequent time penalty handing victory to Comanche..

Black Jack was just 28 minutes behind, followed narrowly by Comanche and then Infotrack.

After Comanche led for most of the race, Wild Oats XI made an overnight gamble to sail a wider route near Tasman Island.

“We basically sailed around the opposition and got ourselves into a position where the breeze filled in from the southwest – this morning we were in the right spot,” Richards said. “That was a game-winning manoeuvre right there.”

——————-

So far as I can tell, five yachts have now finished. The fifth is Alive, which has won the IRC 0 category. The race leader under handicap is currently Ichi Ban which is leading the IRC 1 category and is currently in 11th place for line honours.

The black colour seems to be nothing more than a fashion statement.

The colour is supposed to indicate carbon fibre. But there are apparently still good reasons for not using carbon fibre in sails, perhaps because of flex problems. So sails made from other materials bare dyed black. Technora is a black Aramid.

Most sails are still made of polyester.

Update on the L2H race. Weather wild. Several yachts retired due to gear failure and/or common sense 😁, including Talofa. The boys are disappointed but all safe. Another Kettering yacht, RAD, lost their mast early this morning coming round Tasman Island. All aboard safe and they have made their way into Port Arthur. Prion, also from Kettering, are still soldiering on. Kudos to John, Michelle and crew. Stay safe guys

One set of rules, for yacht stability, is ISO 12217-2 category A.

There are four categories in that standard, from A which is the most stable to D which is the least stable. A very simple back of envelope type calculation gives a stability factor which is the direct product of stability factors for each perceived failure method.

One that argues against catamarans is the ability to self-right if inverted.

Other factors include the ability to shed water from the sails after the boat has been tipped on its side, etc.
